How do I place an order with McDowell’s?
Each of our cakes are an individually crafted work of art! The cost of your cake is not only the ingredients, but also the materials (cake board, flowers, toppers, etc), the tools used to create it, and most importantly: our time! We design your cake, shop for ingredients and materials, bake your cake, cook your fillings, decorate, package, deliver… The list goes on. For some cakes, this is a process that takes dozens of hours over several days!
For that reason, we will provide you with a quote when you have filled out our inquiry form. Our minimum cake order is $59 for a six-inch one-tier round cake serving 10-12 people. Our minimum cupcake order is 2 dozen at $36/dozen. Pricing for cookies, donuts, brownies, and other treats are by request only.
To book your date, we require a 25% nonrefundable deposit of your initial quote. This secures your date and time and ensures no one else can claim your spot! The remaining 75% is due 5 days before your delivery date. We regret that we cannot offer any refunds or make any major changes to your order within 5 days of your scheduled delivery.

What flavors are available?
What kind of frosting do you use? Can I get a fondant cake?
We use Italian meringue buttercream which has a lovely fluffy texture, slightly buttery flavor, and a pleasant sweetness. Ganache, royal icing, and fondant may be selectively used for accents at artist’s discretion. We politely decline cake designs that are entirely or mostly covered in fondant.
We do offer vegan and dairy-free cakes in select flavors. For vegan and dairy-free cakes, we use a vegan American buttercream made with Miyoko’s Kitchen vegan butter. Please let us know of any allergies or dietary restrictions when placing your order. We make every effort to avoid cross-contamination, but please know that our kitchen is not free of any major allergens and therefore we cannot guarantee a 100% allergen-free cake.
We do not currently offer gluten-free cakes. Many talented bakers in Asheville can accommodate your gluten-free needs - ask us for recs and we shall provide!

Do you offer delivery?
We do offer delivery for all orders regardless of size for an applicable fee. Tiered cakes and other orders over $200 will incur a mandatory delivery and setup fee to ensure that your treats arrive to their final destination safe and sound! Delivery fees for orders under $200/1-tier cakes are calculated at $1.25/mile from our bakery in Woodfin. Setup and delivery fees for tiered cakes and orders over $200 start at $25.
I have a small but lovely collection of ceramic cake stands available for rent with applicable deposit and fee. I currently do not have any stands appropriate for very large cakes (11” and up), so please plan to provide your own stand if you are ordering a large cake, and keep in mind the bigger the cake, the heavier it will be!
Can I rent a cake stand?
Our cakes are best served at room temperature, and will be completely safe for consumption left at room temperature for a couple of days. However, for best results, we recommend keeping it in the refrigerator until about 2 hours before serving - especially in the summer! Your cake can also be frozen solid, and will need at least 6 hours at room temperature to thaw completely. Once the cake is cut, we recommend covering the exposed cake innards with plastic wrap before refrigerating - this will prevent it from drying out.
Buttercream is made of butter (obviously) and butter + heat = sad melty mess. Buttercream sweats in humidity so if you plan to leave your cake out at room temperature for a period of time before serving, please make sure it is in a shaded place! We recommend storing it indoors during summer weather until you’re ready to serve it.
